Marie Storr-Paulsen serves as Head of Section for Monitoring and Data at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Technical University of Denmark. Her work focuses on fisheries management, stock assessment, and ecosystem-based approaches to sustainable fishing practices, with particular emphasis on the Baltic Sea region. She actively contributes to international fisheries science through her involvement with the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).
Her research spans multiple critical areas in fisheries science including stock assessment methodologies, bycatch reduction strategies, ecosystem monitoring, and socio-economic aspects of fisheries. She has pioneered work in environmental DNA (eDNA) applications for fisheries monitoring and has conducted extensive research on Baltic Sea cod populations and their ecosystem interactions. Her fingerprint analysis reveals strong specialization in Stock Assessment (100%), Baltic Sea research (95%), and Fisheries Management (37%).
Analysis of her recent publications shows a clear trend toward integrating technological innovations with traditional fisheries science. Her work increasingly focuses on ecosystem-based management approaches, combining habitat mapping, bycatch assessment using molecular techniques, and socio-economic considerations to develop more sustainable fisheries policies. The research demonstrates a shift from single-species management toward holistic ecosystem approaches that consider both biological and human dimensions of marine resource use.
- Principal Investigator on TEFIMO project (Technologies for ecosystem and fisheries monitoring)
- Project participant in MAKE-IT (Sustainable management of mackerel in the North Sea)
- Supervisor for PhD research on electronic monitoring systems in fisheries
- Active participant in multiple EU-funded projects including ECOSPACE and SEAwise
As Head of Section for Monitoring and Data, she leads a multidisciplinary team responsible for fisheries data collection, analysis, and reporting. Her section collaborates extensively with international organizations including ICES and EU fisheries management bodies. The team works at the intersection of fisheries science, data management, and policy implementation, providing critical scientific support for sustainable fisheries management decisions.
