
Marie Petersmann

Marie Petersmann is an Assistant Professor of Law at LSE Law School, part of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on international law, ecology, and critical theory, with a particular emphasis on resolving conflicts between environmental protection and human rights. She holds a PhD from the European University Institute (Florence) and an LLM from the Graduate Institute (Geneva). Her notable work includes the book When Environmental Protection and Human Rights Collide: The Politics of Conflict Management by Regional Courts (Cambridge University Press, 2022), for which she received the Swiss Society for International Law Prize 2020.
Prior to LSE, she held positions at Tilburg Law School, the Istituto Svizzero in Rome, Utrecht University, and the Strathclyde Center for Environmental Law and Governance. She currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Review of European, Comparative & International Environmental Law.
Her research interests include transnational environmental law, legal conflict management, and the intersection of human rights and climate change. She has explored topics such as the Global Pact for the Environment, digital sovereignty, and the ethical dimensions of environmental governance. Her work often employs critical legal theory and interdisciplinary approaches to address contemporary legal challenges in the Anthropocene.
Awards include the Swiss Society for International Law Prize 2020 for her doctoral thesis. Her recent publications span themes like algorithmic governance, climate justice, and the reordering of legal frameworks in response to ecological crises.
