Marie Murphy is a Professor of Exercise and Health at the University of Edinburgh and holds a joint appointment at Ulster University (0.2 FTE). She is Director of the Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (PAHRC) and a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences, and the Higher Education Academy. She chairs the WHO Europe Health Enhancing Physical Activity Steering Committee (HEPA Europe) and previously served on the Board of the International Society of Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH). She led the sub-panel for the UK's Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.

Her research focuses on physical activity and exercise's impact on health, particularly walking, using multidisciplinary methods spanning behavioral and biochemical measures. She contributed to the 2011 and 2019 UK physical activity guidelines and leads the development of the new UK guidelines. Her work has informed policy in the US, UK, and Ireland.
Funded Projects: She is Principal Investigator on projects such as the Cross-border Healthcare Intervention Trials (CHITIN) and the Walking In ScHools (WISH) trial.
