Marie McAuliffe

Marie McAuliffe serves as Head of the Migration Research and Publications Division at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva and Editor of IOM's flagship World Migration Report. She is an international migration specialist with over 25 years of experience across government, research, and policy domains. Academically, she holds positions as a Senior Fellow at the Global Migration Centre, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, and a Sir Roland Wilson Fellow at the Australian National University.

Dr. McAuliffe completed her doctoral research at the Australian National University as a Sir Roland Wilson Fellow, receiving the Charles Price Prize in demography in 2018 for outstanding contributions to the field. Her expertise encompasses migration systems, demographic analysis, and policy development.

Her research focuses on international migration dynamics, particularly irregular migration patterns, data-driven policy formulation, and demographic impacts. She has directed major initiatives including the $6.5 million Australian irregular migration research program (2012-2014), resulting in an ANU Press publication, and serves as Associate Editor for the Harvard Data Science Review while contributing to World Economic Forum publications.

Her scientific recognition includes:

Marie McAuliffe regularly advises heads of state, ministers, and UN officials—including former Secretary General Kofi Annan—and has led research teams for IOM, ILO, and private sector entities across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. She managed significant grants such as the Australian irregular migration program and co-chaired the World Bank's KNOMAD working group on migration data.

At IOM, she directs the Migration Research and Publications Division, overseeing global teams responsible for the World Migration Report, Migration Policy Practice journal, and collaboration with leading researchers worldwide.
