Marie-Luise Raters is an Adjunct Professor of Ethics, Ethics Education, Aesthetics, and Philosophy of Religion at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Potsdam, where she is affiliated with both the Institute for Life Design - Ethics - Religious Studies (LER) and the Institute of Philosophy. Her academic work focuses on practical philosophy, particularly moral dilemmas, supererogation, and ethics education.
Professor Raters' research centers on the philosophical analysis of supererogation—the concept of morally valuable actions that go beyond duty. She has made significant contributions to resolving the paradox of supererogation by distinguishing between ultraerogations and decency erogations, providing a framework for understanding why certain morally valuable actions should not be considered duties. Her work bridges theoretical ethics with practical educational applications, making it relevant to both academic philosophy and classroom instruction.
Her publications demonstrate a consistent focus on moral philosophy and ethics education. Through her research, she has established a theoretical foundation for understanding different types of supererogatory actions and developed practical methods for teaching ethical reasoning. Her comparative work on religious education models, particularly regarding the teaching of Islam in German-speaking countries through the MORE-Projekt, shows her commitment to applying philosophical insights to real-world educational contexts and fostering religious tolerance in Europe.
Professor Raters maintains an active teaching schedule with office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00-12:00. She has developed educational materials including workbooks that introduce ethical argumentation techniques through practical exercises, historical perspectives, and systematic approaches from current applied ethics.
