Marie Draz is an Associate Professor at San Diego State University (SDSU) and currently serves as Director and Program Advisor for SDSU’s LGBT Studies Program. Her academic work bridges philosophy and gender studies, specializing in feminist philosophy, critical theory (transgender, decolonial, and queer), and continental philosophy. She examines how gender intersects with race, sexuality, and temporality to shape social structures and individual agency. Draz teaches courses such as Introduction to Ethics, Queer Theory, and 20th Century Continental Philosophy, prioritizing inclusivity for underrepresented groups in philosophy.
Her research critiques state administration of gender categories through a colonial and racial lens, challenging traditional views via transgender studies and temporal analysis. Notable publications include studies on anti-trans legislation, California’s Gender Recognition Act, and Nietzsche’s influence on gendered memory. Draz actively mentors through programs like the Philosophy in a Key Summer Institute and the Job Candidate Mentoring Program in Philosophy, fostering diversity in academic spaces.
Publications span journals like Hypatia, TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to gender, time, and power. Her work emphasizes the transformative potential of queer and trans frameworks in rethinking societal norms.
