Marie Clarke is a Full Professor of Education and Deputy Registrar and Dean of Learning and Teaching at University College Dublin (UCD). She has held key academic roles, including Head of the School of Education (2007–2011), Dean of Arts (2015–2017), and Dean of Undergraduate Studies (2017–2025). Her leadership focuses on educational innovation, academic regulations, and technology-enhanced learning. She chairs the Higher Education Authority’s national forum on student engagement and serves on various national and international committees, including Universitas 21’s Educational Innovation Steering Group (2019–2022).
Clarke’s research spans higher education policy, global teacher leadership, and the history of education. She leads funded projects on female teachers in the Global South and co-founded the UCD Centre for the Study of Higher Education (2019–2024). Her work addresses educational equity, digital poverty, and the impact of austerity on academia. Key publications include studies on Indian female teacher identities, internationalization of Irish higher education, and vocational education history in Ireland.
She has received the Principal Fellow Higher Education Academy (PFHEA) recognition for her contributions to teaching and leadership. Her professional service includes roles on the Teaching Council of Ireland, Student Grant Appeals Board, and Irish Congress of Trade Unions Disability Committee. She holds degrees from UCD, including a PhD in Education.
