Dr. Marie Bissell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and TESOL at The University of Texas at Arlington since August 2024. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from The Ohio State University (2024), an MA in English from North Carolina State University (2019), and a BA in Linguistics from Washington University (2017). Her research focuses on laboratory phonology, language variation, and change, with an emphasis on experimental methods. She has received prestigious awards including the Texas Linguistics Emissary (2025) and Presidential Honorary Membership from the American Dialect Society (2024).
Her service roles include leading the Language Variation and Change Laboratory, co-organizing the Phonetics/Phonology Research Group, and serving on multiple university and professional committees. Current grant applications include a National Science Foundation proposal on 'Contrast enhancement in actuation of sound change' (submitted Jan 2025).
Teaching interests span sociolinguistics, phonetics, and phonology. Recent courses include LING 5310 (Sociolinguistics) and LING 2371 (Language in Multicultural USA). Professional memberships include the Acoustical Society of America, American Dialect Society, and Linguistic Society of America.
