Marie Bendix Simonsen

Marie Bendix Simonsen is a Doctor and PhD student at the University of Southern Denmark's Faculty of Health Sciences, working with the Clinical Institute and Research Unit for Pediatrics at Odense University Hospital (OUH). She maintains an active clinical role as an introductory physician at Kolding Hospital's pediatric department since March 2020, following previous positions at Svendborg Hospital, Vejle Hospital, and in general medicine.

Her research since 2016 focuses on premature infant nutrition with particular emphasis on enteral nutrition and breast milk. She investigates bioactive components in breast milk and their importance for organ development in premature babies, methods to optimize maternal milk provision, and techniques to improve milk fortification to better resemble fresh breast milk. Her work spans clinical research, systematic reviews, and practical implementation in neonatal care units across Denmark.

Dr. Simonsen's publications reveal a consistent trajectory in neonatal nutrition research, with increasing focus on evidence-based protocols for milk handling, fortification, and antenatal expression. Her recent work demonstrates translation of research into clinical practice guidelines and educational initiatives for healthcare professionals.

She currently leads multiple significant research projects including The EXPRESS-MOM study on antenatal breastmilk expression, research on mineral supplementation for preterm infants, and investigations into milk fat globule membrane components. Her teaching portfolio includes Pediatric Communication, specialized courses on milk components, Neonatal Resuscitation, Child Examination, and Neonatology case demonstrations, demonstrating her commitment to both clinical practice and academic education in pediatric medicine.
