Marianne Darbi serves as Professor and Head of the Institute for Landscape Planning and Impact Mitigation within the Department of Landscape Planning and Nature Conservation at Hochschule Geisenheim University, a position she assumed in June 2020 after holding research roles at the Leibniz Institute for Ecological Urban and Regional Development (2007-2016) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (2017-2020).
She earned her diploma in landscape architecture and PhD in engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from Technische Universität Dresden, complemented by studies at École d'Architecture et de Paysage de Bordeaux, France.
Her research centers on biodiversity conservation, impact mitigation strategies, sustainable land-use systems, green economy frameworks, and market-based environmental instruments, with particular emphasis on biodiversity offsets as practical compensation mechanisms for ecological damage from development projects. She actively bridges academic research with policy implementation and international sustainability practices.
Her 2024 publications analyze systemic challenges in German nature conservation administration, proposing integrated reforms across organizational design, personnel development, legal frameworks, and financial systems to modernize conservation governance for contemporary ecological challenges.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Study Prize of the German Society for Environmental Impact Assessment (2016) awarded for her doctoral thesis on Voluntary Biodiversity Offsets
Professor Darbi coordinates high-impact initiatives including the German Network Forum on Biodiversity Research (NeFo), demonstrating consistent leadership in translating complex ecological research into actionable policy frameworks while maintaining strong international research collaborations.
She integrates her field expertise into teaching at Hochschule Geisenheim, mentoring students in environmental planning with focus on real-world application of conservation science.
