Marianne Closson is a Lecturer in 16th Century Literature at the University of Artois, affiliated with the UFR Letters and Arts. Her research focuses on demonology, fantasy, historical representations in literature, and gender studies, particularly in texts from 1550–1650.
- Key themes: Witchcraft trials, hermaphrodite symbolism, brother-sister incest, baroque theater, and links between scientific/mythical discourse and literary texts.
- She has edited critical editions like Magdelaine Bavent (2023) and co-organized international colloquia on giants, incest, and gender and madness.
Her publications span demonology, utopia, and gender, with a focus on lesser-known texts like autobiographies of possessed women and satirical prose fictions. Recent articles analyze the diabolical origins of disease, demonic possession as enthusiasm, and the devil's role in early modern political scandals.
Notable collaborations include co-direction of conferences on hermaphrodites (2011), adelphic incest (2016), and madness (2021). She contributes to interdisciplinary projects linking literature with religious history, psychology, and art.
