Marianna Pavan is a Lecturer in Sport Management and Policy at the Sport Policy Unit within the Business School at Manchester Metropolitan University. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh focusing on Sport for Development and Peace, an MSc in Human Rights from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Padua. Her research explores social change through sport, human rights in sport contexts, and governance of sport organizations.
Dr. Pavan has taught at institutions including the University of Padua, University of Edinburgh, and the Univesité Général Lansana Conte de Sofonia (Guinea). She advises doctoral students in areas like sport governance, disability inclusion in sports, and the human rights implications of mega-sporting events such as football World Cups. Her consulting work includes collaborations with the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the EU Commission’s EACEA Agency.
Her research outputs span academic articles on sport policy, human rights, and cultural dimensions of sport, alongside contributions to international conferences such as the Leisure Studies Association and the European Association for the Sociology of Sport. She also engages with public discourse through media appearances like a 2025 Ecosportivamente Podcast episode on sport's role in fostering inclusion and human rights.
As a Trustee of Scottish Para Football, she advocates for disability inclusion in sports governance structures. Her work emphasizes practical applications of sport policies to promote equity and sustainability in global sporting systems.
