Marianna Markantoni is a Senior Lecturer of Sustainable Business and Entrepreneurship at University College Groningen, part of the University of Groningen. Her academic career spans roles as a policy advisor, researcher, and educator, with expertise in rural development, energy citizenship, and community resilience. She holds a PhD in Cultural Geography from the University of Groningen (2012) and has held fellowships from the Onassis Foundation and the Mansholt Chair for Rural Development.
Her research focuses on sustainable business models, energy democracy, and community empowerment, with notable projects including the EU-funded EnergyPROSPECTS initiative. She has authored over 10 peer-reviewed articles, including influential works on rural community resilience and energy citizenship pathways.
Markantoni has received awards such as the National Thesis Prize (2007) and the Scottish Crucible Programme (2017). She actively engages in teaching innovation, leading a LEGO Serious Play-based entrepreneurship education project funded by the Teaching Academy Groningen.
Her professional experience includes roles at Scotland's Rural College, Audit Scotland, and the Scottish Government, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to policy and practice. She currently contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in rural revitalization and climate resilience.
