Mariann Villa is a Professor at the Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU, specializing in mobility studies, rural sociology, and local community dynamics. She is a core member of NTNU's Migration and Mobility research group and affiliated with the Equity and Inclusion in Educational Organizations team. Previously, she held roles at RURALIS Institute and as a guest associated professor at NTNU's Geography Department. Her research explores internal migration, recreational mobility, rural-urban interactions, and qualitative methodology. She leads courses on qualitative methods and analysis at bachelor, master, and PhD levels.
Her work includes editing a Journal of Rural Studies special issue on rural schools and communities, as well as publishing widely on topics like rural education, local identity, and mobility patterns.
