Prof. Mariana Valente is an Assistant Professor of International Economic Law at the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of São Paulo and has conducted research at UC Berkeley, LMU Munich, and Yale Law School. Her work focuses on the intersection of law, technology, and society, particularly regulating the digital economy, data justice, gender equality, and intellectual property. She co-directs InternetLab, a Brazilian think tank, and advises the Brazilian Senate on AI regulation. Previously, she worked at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, focusing on cultural heritage digitization and legal frameworks for museums.
Her research explores topics including social protection policies in the digital age, online gender-based violence, copyright in Latin America, and the societal impact of digital technologies. She analyzes how algorithmic systems affect marginalized groups and advocates for equitable digital policies that balance innovation with human rights protections.
Key affiliations include the Brazilian Senate Commission for AI regulation and the ILE-HSG research group. Her work bridges legal analysis with practical advocacy, addressing challenges such as data privacy in social protection programs, content moderation frameworks, and cultural digitization ethics.
