Mariana Hase Ueta

Mariana Hase Ueta is a Research Fellow at Wageningen University & Research, focusing on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of food sociology, sustainable diets, and emerging technologies. She currently contributes to the Animal-free Milk Consortium, examining societal integration of novel protein technologies. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Campinas (Brazil), a Master’s in Chinese Society from Fudan University (China), and a Bachelor’s in Social Sciences (Anthropology) from UNICAMP. She has held visiting positions at institutions in Germany, China, and Brazil, supported by prestigious fellowships like Fulbright and DAAD.

Her research explores food systems transformation through sociological lenses, including cultured meat innovations, intergenerational food consumption patterns, and Sino-Brazilian socio-environmental dynamics. Key themes include environmental justice, technological ethics, and global South perspectives on sustainability. She has published widely on topics like food security, cultural exchanges between China and Brazil, and policy frameworks for novel food technologies.

Mariana received the 2021 Emerging Scholar Award from Aarhus University’s Food Studies Network. Her work bridges academic inquiry with practical societal impact, emphasizing equitable transitions toward sustainable food systems. Current projects include analyzing socio-technical challenges in cellular agriculture and evaluating the socio-environmental implications of Chinese investments in Brazilian infrastructure.
