Dr. Marian Kennedy is an Associate Professor at Clemson University's College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS). Her research focuses on mechanical and tribological behavior of thin films and bulk materials, alongside engineering education initiatives addressing student self-efficacy and teacher training. She holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Materials Science from Washington State University.
Her awards include the Grand Challenges Faculty Fellowship (2020-21), Murray Stokely Teaching Award (2017), and Byars Prize for Teaching (2013). Her lab, kennedyresearch.org, explores material deformation, biomedical applications, and educational strategies. Notable advisees include Brad Schultz (PhD 2017).
Research highlights include phantom materials for brain tissue training, biofilm inhibition on medical implants, and frameworks for undergraduate researcher identity. Current grants include an NSF-funded Teacher Research Program in Advanced Manufacturing. Her work bridges material science with educational innovation, emphasizing diversity and interdisciplinary collaboration.
