Dr. Lois Krause is a Senior Lecturer Emeritus at Clemson University, affiliated with the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Clemson University (1996), an M.A.T. in Secondary Science Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University (1994), and a B.S. in Chemistry and Physics from the same institution (1980). Her career spans industry research (semiconductors, polymer synthesis) and academia, focusing on learning styles and science education. She retired from industry in 1992 to teach full-time, emphasizing 'Scientific Literacy' approaches in physical and earth sciences for education majors.
- Education: Clemson University (Ph.D.), Fairleigh Dickinson University (M.A.T., B.S.)
Her research explores individual differences in learning, critical thinking, and evidence-based education. She developed the Cognitive Profile Model, used globally via CognitiveProfile.com, and authored widely adopted textbooks like How We Learn and Why We Don’t (over 75,000 copies sold). Key interests include STEM education, statistical process control in manufacturing, and student-centered instructional design.
Dr. Krause’s grants include the Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit (CESU) project (2004–2006), mapping geology at Cowpens National Battlefield. She served as editor of the Clemson Kappan, advised Phi Sigma Pi, and held roles as Faculty Fellow in Distance Education Technology and the Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation. Awards include the Daughters of Liberty Medal (2010) and Clemson’s “Best Lecturer” honor (2003).
Her advising and grants highlight collaborations with Winthrop University and initiatives in service learning. She pioneered statistical methodologies in semiconductor manufacturing and transitioned to education with a focus on bridging industry research and pedagogy.
