Maria do Carmo Henriques Lança is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Nova University of Lisbon (FCT/UNL). She holds a PhD in Physical Engineering from FCT/UNL (2003) and a Physics degree from the University of Lisbon (1988). Her research focuses on the electrical and dielectric properties of biomaterials and polymers, particularly hydroxyapatite, cork, and polyethylene.
- Education: B.Sc. in Physics (1988, University of Lisbon), PhD in Physical Engineering (2003, FCT/UNL)
Her work explores the influence of electrical polarization on bone and dental substitutes, while also investigating dielectric aging in polymers and novel applications of cork. She has contributed to studies on biogenic synthesis of nanomaterials for electronics and medicine, as well as non-toxic glasses and bioceramics.
Notable projects include leading the PolarBone initiative (QREN 38996, 2014–2015) on polarized calcium phosphates for bone repair and participating in the DENTALBLAST project (PT2020 017956, 2016–2019) developing antibacterial dental coatings. Her publications emphasize interdisciplinary applications of dielectrics in biomedical contexts.
