Maria del Mar Bassa Vanrell

Maria del Mar Bassa Vanrell holds dual academic appointments as a Visiting Professor at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and as a Junior Researcher at the Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon (CLUL), Portugal. Her position at CLUL is funded by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). At UIB, she teaches courses including English for Science for Biology, Biochemistry, Physics, Geography and Chemistry degrees, as well as Understanding and Interpreting Academic Texts in English and Understanding English Grammar I.

Her research focuses on the intersection of theoretical and empirical linguistics, with primary interests in semantics, pragmatics, and syntax-semantics interfaces. She employs both formal linguistic theory and quantitative methodologies, incorporating corpus data to examine linguistic variation across contexts. Her work spans comparative English and Romance linguistics, with special attention to indigenous languages of Brazil, dialectal and typological variation patterns, and sociolinguistic aspects of bilingualism and language contact.

Dr. Bassa Vanrell is actively involved in multiple research communities:
