Her research expertise spans:
- Energy systems and renewable energy technologies
- Climate change policy and mitigation strategies
- Computational fluid dynamics and combustion processes
- Air quality assessment and health impacts
- Evidence-based science and innovation policy
Dr. Carvalho's scholarly work demonstrates a clear evolution from technical engineering research toward policy-oriented scholarship. Her early publications focused on combustion modeling and energy systems, while her more recent work addresses European energy policy frameworks, climate change strategies, and air quality management. Many of her publications bridge technical understanding with policy implications, reflecting her unique position at the intersection of science and governance. Her research has significantly contributed to understanding urban air pollution, sustainable energy systems, and the policy frameworks needed for effective climate action.
Her scientific achievements have been recognized through numerous prestigious awards:
- 2016 Recipient of the first Prize Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo for outstanding women scientists
- 2016 IUMRS Global Leadership and Service Award
- 2011 Prize for the best Member of the European Parliament in Research and Innovation
- Multiple fellowships including AAAS, AIAA, and the World Academy of Art and Science
- 2002 Awarded title of 'Great Official of the Order of Public Instruction' by the President of Portugal
Throughout her career, Dr. Carvalho has demonstrated exceptional leadership in both research and policy arenas. She founded a research group of 50 people at Instituto Superior Técnico and has coordinated more than 20 European research consortia. In her European Commission roles, she played a crucial part in launching FP7, establishing the European Research Council, and designing the European Strategy for Energy and Climate Change. As rapporteur for Horizon 2020 implementation, she significantly shaped European research funding frameworks.
Dr. Carvalho maintains active involvement in numerous scientific associations and academies, serving as founder of the Portuguese Academy of Engineers (Member number 2) and holding fellowships in multiple prestigious organizations. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering, environmental science, and policy-making, making substantial contributions to both academic knowledge and practical applications in energy and environmental fields across Europe.
