Maria Venetis is an Associate Professor at the Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University. She joined the faculty in 2012 and holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Rutgers University, alongside Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Speech Communication from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Research Interests
Venetis focuses on how individuals communicate about health, particularly between patients and medical providers. Her work explores the impact of this communication on patient coping, satisfaction, disclosure, and avoidance behaviors. She is a leading scholar in interpersonal disclosure, examining how people share personal health information (e.g., cancer diagnoses) with loved ones, especially in contexts involving non-visible health conditions.
Academic Contributions
Venetis teaches undergraduate and graduate seminars in interpersonal and health communication. She actively mentors and collaborates with master’s and doctoral students, earning recognition in 2016 for her graduate mentoring excellence.
