Maria Roussou

Maria Roussou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from University College London (2002–2006), an MSc in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1994–1997), and an MFA in Electronic Visualization (1993–1997). Her research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction, Virtual Reality, and Technology-Enhanced Learning, with applications in cultural technology and gaming.

Her employment history includes roles as Founding Director of makebelieve design & consulting (2003–2016), Head of the Virtual Reality Department at the Foundation of the Hellenic World (1998–2003), and Educational Technology Specialist at the Walker Art Center (1997–1998). She has also held academic positions at the University of Athens since 2016, progressing to her current rank in 2023.

Roussou’s work integrates computational methods with immersive technologies, emphasizing user-centered design and interdisciplinary applications. Her recent research explores virtual environments for education, cultural heritage preservation, and healthcare visualization. She has contributed to international projects bridging art, science, and technology.
