Maria Mohr

Maria Mohr is a full-time Professor for Film and Video at the Merz Academy, with prior teaching roles at the German University in Cairo and University of the Arts Berlin. Her career bridges documentary filmmaking and experimental media design, often exploring the intersection of personal memory, spirituality, and urban landscapes. She holds a Diploma in French Language and Civilization from Sorbonne University (1993-94), Architecture studies from TU Darmstadt (1994-98) and École Paris-La-Villette (1997-98), and an Experimental Media Design degree from University of the Arts Berlin (2002-05).

Mohr's filmography includes poetic documentaries like Bruder Schwester (2010), examining sibling relationships through spiritual and biological lenses, and Am Weltrand (2014), a multi-channel installation merging poetry and film. Her earliest award-winning work Cousin Cousine (2005) received the 3sat Award and German Short Film Silver Award. She has received scholarships from the Academy of Arts Berlin and DAAD, and served on juries for FEMINA Festival and DAAD Berlin Artists-in-Residence.

Notable collaborations include co-creating the video installation 'Double Projections - The Folder is Empty We Are Present' with Jutta Eberhard at the Academy of Arts Berlin. Her teaching spans workshops on absent presence in film and courses on practical moving image education. Mohr is a founding member of Pro Quote Film, advocating for gender equity in filmmaking, and has curated film programs for the Goethe Institute in Tunisia, Ecuador, and Togo.
