Maria Mitchell (1818–1889) was a pioneering astronomer and educator who became the first professor hired at Vassar College. She established the astronomy program and directed the Vassar Observatory, equipping it with a 12-inch telescope – then the second largest in America. Mitchell gained international recognition for discovering a telescopic comet in 1847, earning her a gold medal from the King of Denmark.

- Student-led field research expeditions
Mitchell broke gender barriers by hosting suffragist meetings in the observatory and served as president of the American Association of Women. She successfully raised $30,000 to save the observatory from closure through a national campaign.
Her mentorship produced exceptional scientists including three students listed in Cattell's American Men of Science. The Maria Mitchell Association preserves her Nantucket birthplace as a scientific memorial.
