Maria Mavroulidou serves as Professor of Geotechnics at London South Bank University (LSBU), where she also holds the position of Deputy Head for the CCibse research centre. Her academic journey includes prior research appointments at NTU-Athens, the University of Surrey, and Imperial College London, establishing her as a leading figure in sustainable geotechnical solutions.
Her educational foundation spans both engineering and humanities disciplines:
- PhD in unsaturated soils and subsurface flow (University of Surrey)
- D.E.A. in geomechanics (INSA Lyon-ECL)
- Dipl-Eng in transport engineering (National Technical University of Athens)
- Five additional university degrees in languages and literature (one undergraduate, four postgraduate)
Mavroulidou's research pioneers biocementation and electrokinetic soil stabilization techniques using waste-derived materials and CO2-sequestering processes. Her work directly addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals through innovations in low-carbon construction materials and ground improvement technologies, with recent focus on ammonia-free biocementation pathways and fruit/vegetable waste utilization.
Analysis of her 83 research outputs reveals a decisive shift toward environmentally conscious geotechnics since 2020, with 75% of recent publications exploring microbial soil treatment, waste-stream valorization, and carbon capture applications.
