Dr Maria Maley is a Senior Lecturer at the ANU School of Politics and International Relations within the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on Australian politics, public administration, public policy, ministerial advisers, and gender issues in staffing. She holds a BA from Sydney University and a PhD from ANU.
Her work addresses parliamentary workplace culture, gender equality, and reforms in political staffing. Notable achievements include co-authoring the book *Toxic Parliaments: And What Can Be Done About Them* (2024) and winning the Marian Simms Policy Engagement Award (2022). She contributed to the Australian Human Rights Commission’s review of parliamentary workplaces (2021).
Awards include the 2024 School of Politics and International Relations Award for Impact and Outreach. Her research explores systemic issues in ministerial offices, including the employment of public servants and gender dynamics. She has advised on reforms to improve workplace safety and staff welfare in parliamentary environments.
Media engagements include the *Democracy Sausage* podcast (2024) and articles in *The Conversation*, *Sydney Morning Herald*, and *Canberra Times*. She supervises research students in areas of public policy and political staffing.
