Maria Lindström is an Associate Professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, Umeå University. She holds a Recognised University Teacher qualification and is affiliated with the Umeå Center for Disability Research. Her work focuses on occupational therapy interventions for individuals with severe psychiatric disabilities, narrative inquiry methodologies, and disability studies. Key areas include rehabilitation models, patient-centered care, and assistive technology impact.
Research interests emphasize mental health recovery pathways, interprofessional collaboration in healthcare transitions, and the role of home environments in fostering agency. Lindström's work integrates qualitative methodologies with clinical practice, particularly in sheltered housing and community-based settings. She has contributed to international standards in rural mental health research and validated outcome measurement tools like the Swedish ReQoL.
Her recent publications (2022-2024) address pragmatic clinical trials for rehabilitation effectiveness, wheelchair user experiences, and narrative-based care frameworks. Lindström's research consistently bridges theoretical concepts (e.g., Ricoeur's hermeneutics) with practical healthcare applications. She actively participates in program development for persons with complex mental health needs, emphasizing cost-effectiveness and implementation science.
Notable contributions include co-developing the Everyday Life Rehabilitation model and publishing extensively on occupational identity construction through assistive technologies. Her work demonstrates a commitment to participatory approaches that center client perspectives in mental health and disability research.
