Maria Lerm is a Professor in Medical Microbiology at Linköping University, leading research on epigenetic mechanisms in infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis and post-COVID-19 conditions. She holds roles as a SciLifeLab Fellow and node-leader in the Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden (CBCS), driving drug discovery and compound screening initiatives. Her work focuses on DNA methylation biomarkers for respiratory diseases (e.g., the PULMO project) and translational research through her company PredictMe, developing epigenetic disease classifiers.
Her research integrates immunology, epigenetics, and computational biology to understand immune memory and host-pathogen interactions. Key projects include the 64-million-SEK-funded study on epigenetic responses during infections and the PULMO initiative for lung disease diagnostics. Awards include a prestigious grant from the Swedish Heart Lung Foundation (2022).
Maria’s academic contributions span teaching in medical and biomedical programs and editorial roles in Journal of Internal Medicine. Her interdisciplinary collaborations bridge academia, industry, and healthcare, emphasizing data-driven approaches to combat respiratory diseases and tuberculosis.
