Maria Larsson is a Professor at Karlstad University's Department of Nursing, School of Health and Social Studies. Her research focuses on symptom cluster management in oncology patients, palliative care quality, and nurse-led cancer care models such as the contact nurse system. She leads interdisciplinary projects like the 'Management of Symptom Clusters' program, linking biological markers with symptom experiences in lung cancer patients. Her work addresses end-of-life care challenges, including pandemic-related moral stress among healthcare workers and family caregiver support. She teaches oncological nursing, palliative care, and symptom theories at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Research interests emphasize translating symptom theories into clinical practice, improving patient participation in dementia care, and evaluating nurse-led interventions. Her studies often involve collaborations with Norwegian and international partners. Recent work highlights training programs for contact nurses in validating communication and long-term impacts of family interventions during parental illness.
Publications span over 30 years, with key contributions in symptom management, palliative care quality, and nutritional support for cancer patients. She has advised a PhD student in nursing linked to the SyBiLuC project. Her work combines empirical research (e.g., scoping reviews on pain assessment in dementia) with methodological frameworks (e.g., applying symptom theory in integrative reviews).
Grants and collaborations include projects on healthcare personnel stress during pandemics and adapting quality assessment tools for gynecological cancer care. She has developed clinical models like the SIV-project nursing clinic for head and neck cancer patients, improving nutritional outcomes and reducing hospital admissions.
