Dr. Maria Kutar is a Professor at the University of Salford's Salford Business School, where she serves as Director of Undergraduate Business Management Programmes and Co-Lead for the Disruptive Technologies Research and Innovation Cluster. With a background combining Law (undergraduate) and Computer Science (Masters and PhD), she brings an interdisciplinary perspective to her work in digital transformation and technology ethics.
Her research focuses on the human aspects of technology, examining how businesses (particularly SMEs) maximize benefits from digital technologies and the consequences of these technologies on privacy and identity. Taking a sociotechnical viewpoint, she emphasizes design strategies that consider human needs, responsibility, and ethical issues. Dr. Kutar teaches across information systems areas including systems analysis and design, legal and professional issues, and emerging/disruptive technologies.
Dr. Kutar has published extensively on digital transformation, with recent work focusing on productivity puzzles in SMEs, digital maturity assessment, GDPR implications for AI, and technology ethics. Her publications span journals, conference presentations, and book chapters, demonstrating both academic rigor and practical relevance to business challenges.

With extensive academic leadership experience, Dr. Kutar has supervised 8 PhD students to completion and currently supervises 3 PhD students. She has worked with various businesses on Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, including projects with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Her research group, the Disruptive Technologies Research and Innovation Cluster, provides opportunities for students and collaborators to engage with cutting-edge research at the intersection of business and technology.
