Maria Kareskoski is a Senior Clinical Instructor and Adjunct Professor (docent) in Animal Reproduction Science at the University of Helsinki, specifically within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Production Animal Medicine department. She is also affiliated with the Helsinki One Health (HOH) initiative and the Helsinki One Health Teachers' Academy.
Her academic credentials include a DVM, PhD, and specialization as a Veterinary Specialist in Equine Medicine. She holds a diplomate status from the European College of Animal Reproduction.
Research interests span equine reproduction, reproductive toxicology, and One Health perspectives, particularly examining environmental contaminants like heavy metals and antimicrobial resistance in equine and other livestock contexts. Her work bridges clinical practice with translational research, focusing on fertility optimization and disease prevention.
Recent publications highlight trends in heavy metal impacts on reproduction, antimicrobial resistance, and metabolic disorders affecting fertility. She leads projects such as ETTS/Kareskoski (funded by Eläinlääketieteen tutkimuksen tukisäätiö sr) and Suomen Hippos ry 2024 (€2,000 funding).
