Maria Jose Hierro is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Yale University. Her research focuses on national identity, nationalism, and multinational contexts in Western Europe, with a particular emphasis on the impact of economic crises on nationalist attitudes. She holds a Ph.D. from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2012) and an M.A. in Social Sciences from the Juan March Institute (2007).
Her current book project, Nurturing Independentism: Movements and Parties in Secessionist Contexts, examines the dynamics between pro-independence movements and political parties. She also explores the relationship between economic conditions and nationalist sentiments, using experimental and observational data from Spain and other Western European nations.
Hierro teaches courses on nationalism, political protests, and contemporary Spanish politics. Recent courses include Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, Political Protests, and Self-Determination, Secession & Accommodation. She has authored or co-authored articles in journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, West European Politics, and South European Society & Politics.
Her research also includes the POLAT Panel, a Spanish political attitudes survey, and collaborations on studies of Catalan secessionism and Spanish party systems. She actively participates in scholarly networks and contributes to public debates on nationalism and democratic governance in Europe.
