Dr. Diego Muro is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations and Researcher at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St Andrews, where he has been since 2016. Previously, he held roles including Assistant Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Associate Professor at King’s College London, and Senior Fellow at the European University Institute.
His academic journey includes a PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics (2004), an MSc in EU Politics from the University of Sussex (1999), and a BA in Politics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1998). His research focuses on political violence, terrorism, nationalism, and secession, with a particular emphasis on Basque separatism and European secessionist movements.
Dr. Muro has authored influential works such as When Does Terrorism Work? (2018), Contemporary Terrorism Studies (2022), and Strategies of Secession and Counter-Secession (2020). His articles explore topics like lone-actor terrorism, secessionist strategies, and the political consequences of the Great Recession in Southern Europe.
He currently supervises four PhD students and contributes to interdisciplinary research initiatives on counter-terrorism and conflict resolution. His work bridges political science, sociology, and international relations, emphasizing empirical approaches to understanding violent extremism and state responses.
