Prof. dr. Maria J. de Haan is a Full Professor of Intercultural Education at the Department of Education & Pedagogy, Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Utrecht University. She serves as Head of the Department Development & Education of Youth in Diverse Societies and has held leadership roles in initiatives like UNION, addressing polarization in Dutch schools.

Her research explores learning and socialization processes in formal and informal educational settings, focusing on cultural diversity, migration, and digital media. Key themes include intergenerational acculturation, transformation of parenting practices post-migration, and reimagining education in digital worlds.
She leads projects such as UNION (countering radicalization in Utrecht schools) and has contributed to studies on multi-ethnic classrooms and immigrant youth’s informal online learning. Her work bridges institutional education with community/family dynamics.
