Maria Henström Engblom is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, Karolinska Institutet (KI), and a member of the IMPACT research group led by Prof. Marie Löf. She is also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia, focusing on child feeding interventions. Her roles include Deputy Study Director for the Nutrition bachelor program at Stockholm University/KI and course leader/teacher across bachelor, master, and doctoral levels.
Dr. Engblom holds a PhD in Medical Science (2018) from KI’s Department of Biosciences and Nutrition. Her research originally focused on genetic aspects of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) but shifted to mHealth/eHealth interventions for early-life health promotion, particularly child nutrition and parental feeding practices. She collaborates with the Centre for Nutrition at KI and the KI eHealth Core Facility to advance digital health tools.
Her work emphasizes evidence-based programs to support parents in establishing healthy eating and activity habits for children, leveraging social networks and peer education. Key projects include the PICNIC program and the ‘Saga Stories in health talks’ intervention.
Teaching highlights include leadership of Nutrition Science curricula at Stockholm University/KI, with a focus on physiology, eHealth evaluation, and science communication. She also contributes to nursing education and healthcare professional training.
Grants include a 2023-2024 project to adapt the PICNIC program for Swedish parents. Her research spans child cardiometabolic health, maternal nutrition, and longitudinal studies on lifestyle behaviors.
