Dr. Maria Helen Murphy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Law at Maynooth University. Her research focuses on the intersection of technology and human rights, particularly privacy, data protection, and artificial intelligence ethics. She holds a PhD from University College Cork (2013), an LLM (magna cum laude) from Temple University (Philadelphia), and a First Class Honors BCL (International) from UCC.
Her research projects include studies on AI and human rights, EU-UK data adequacy, and media representations of data protection during the pandemic. She has authored Surveillance and the Law: Language, Power and Privacy (2019) and co-authored Information and Communications Technology Law in Ireland (2017).
Professional roles include Board Member of the Center for AI and Digital Policy, former Executive Board Member of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (2017–2023), and Member of the National Standards Authority of Ireland’s AI Top Team. She teaches modules like Information Privacy Law and Media Law.
