Maria Gainey

Maria Gainey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Western Carolina University's College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from Wake Forest University and a B.S. from Appalachian State University. Her research focuses on bacteriophage proteins involved in gene regulation and viral defense mechanisms, alongside bacteriophage discovery and genomics. She designs Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) to provide authentic research training.

Research Interests: Her lab employs techniques such as protein expression, cell culture, genetic engineering, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics to study bacteriophage biology. Teaching: She emphasizes hands-on research through CURE courses, ensuring all students gain practical experience in scientific inquiry.
