Steve Cresawn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at James Madison University (JMU) since 2007. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Florida (2005) and a BS in Biology from JMU (1996). His research focuses on bacteriophage genomics, developing computational tools for analyzing viral genomes, and advancing STEM education through inclusive research programs.
Key areas of interest include:
- Computational analysis of bacteriophage genomes
- Design of educational tools for phage discovery (e.g., HHMI SEA-PHAGES program)
- Phage-host interactions and diversity
He teaches Viral Discovery, Viral Genomes & Bioinformatics, and Genomics courses. His lab contributes globally to genomic analysis software used in undergraduate research programs. Recent work emphasizes expanding understanding of phage diversity in Actinobacteria, Microbacterium, and other bacterial systems.
He actively supports STEM education reform through inclusive pedagogy and has contributed to over 100 phage genome sequences. His HHMI SEA-PHAGES program engages thousands of students annually in authentic research experiences.
