Maria Filipa Baltazar de Lima de Sousa is an Associate Professor (PhD) affiliated with the Faculty of Life Sciences, specifically within the Functional and Evolutionary Ecology department. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to ecological sustainability and health. She has been the recipient of the Vienna Research Groups for Young Investigators (VRG) - Gender Mainstreaming award in 2017.
Her research focuses on microbial physiology, sulfur metabolism, and evolutionary genomics. Key projects include Pan-Metabolic Profiling of Archaea (2016–2025), exploring archaeal metabolic diversity; EvolPhysiol (2019–2025), investigating the evolutionary links between Earth’s environment and organismal physiology; and FEMAC2 (2017–2019), a career development initiative for female academics. She collaborates widely, with notable partners including Dr. Neukirchen, Dr. van Ham, and Prof. Schleper.
Her academic activities include organizing the Pint of Science Festival (2025) and delivering public talks like Life: 4 billion years changing (with) Earth. Media engagements span BBC Earth (2021) and Wissenschaft (2018), highlighting her contributions to extremophilic archaea research and the origins of life.
