Dr. Maria Cioppa is an Associate Professor in the School of the Environment at the University of Windsor. She holds a B.Sc. from Carleton University (1990), M.Sc. from the University of Victoria (1992), and Ph.D. from Lehigh University (1997). Her research focuses on applied geophysics, environmental magnetism, and paleomagnetism, with emphasis on geophysical signatures of burials in cemeteries and rock magnetism in hydrocarbon-associated rocks. She has conducted studies on sediment transport, remagnetization in sedimentary rocks, and environmental magnetism in soils and plants.
- Education:
- B.Sc., Carleton University, 1990
- M.Sc., University of Victoria, 1992
- Ph.D., Lehigh University, 1997
Her research facilities include Paleomagnetic and Rock Magnetic Laboratories equipped with advanced instruments such as a 2G cryogenic magnetometer, thermal demagnetizers, and susceptibility meters. She has supervised graduate students in projects ranging from structural geology to global perspectives in science. Dr. Cioppa has received notable awards, including the Premier's Research Excellence Award in 2003 and a teaching award in 2005. Her work integrates citizen science initiatives like WEDigHistory and collaborations on environmental and geological projects in Ontario and the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin.
