Dr. Maria Cerdas Cisneros is an Associate Professor at Missouri State University's Department of Languages, Cultures and Religions, part of the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. She holds a PhD in Spanish with a focus on Contemporary Latin American Literature and Applied Linguistics, along with multiple advanced degrees from Texas Tech University, West Virginia University, and the University of Costa Rica.
Her academic career includes teaching roles at Western Kentucky University, Texas Tech University, and West Virginia University before joining Missouri State University in 2017. She advises the La Barraca Spanish Club and focuses on teaching courses like Medical Spanish, Hispanic Cinema, and Spanish for the Professions.
Research interests center on 21st-century Latin American literature, gender studies, ecocriticism, and geocriticism, with a particular emphasis on postmodern themes and globalization's cultural impacts. Her work often explores intersections of ecology, gender, and spatial dynamics in contemporary narratives.
Key awards include the 2020 Diversity Scholar designation and RCOAL Faculty Summer Award (2018). She has published extensively on authors like César Aira, analyzing urban fragmentation, queer ecology, and postmodern spatial narratives. Her pedagogical contributions are recognized through her ongoing role as Master Advisor since 2017.
