Maria Børja is a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Gender Research, University of Oslo, teaching KFL1010 – Introduction to Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and serving as guest lecturer at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts on feminist film and TV theory.
She holds a Master's degree in Media and Communication from the University of Oslo (2023), with thesis "Rebels on the verge of artistic breakthrough. Female representation in Ninjababy, Gritt and The Worst Person in the World" analyzing gender in contemporary Norwegian cinema.
Her research critically examines feminist film theory through intersections of gender representation, bodily practices in ballet, and the monstrous-feminine as rebellion. She investigates affective responses to cultural texts, motherhood/care theory, climate fiction across media, and disability representation within Norwegian contemporary literature and autofiction, employing rigorous textual/visual analysis frameworks.
A published author with three fiction works including short story collections "Hele verden skal elske oss" (2023) and "Voksenting" (2010), plus novel "NY BY" (2013), she integrates creative practice with academic work through a performative project on artistic agency and motherhood, drawing on 23 years of journalism experience at Norway's National Opera & Ballet and Dagbladet newspaper.
