معرفی
Maria Björkqvist is a Professor at Lund University, affiliated with the Biomarkers in Brain Disease research team and serving as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. She is a Principal Investigator at MultiPark, a multidisciplinary initiative focused on Parkinson’s disease. Her research bridges neurodegenerative disease pathology and therapeutic development.
Research Interests: Maria investigates peripheral disease manifestations in Huntington’s disease, exploring how these mirror neuronal pathology to identify biomarkers and therapeutic avenues. Her work extends to Alzheimer’s disease (via neurovascular coupling studies) and Parkinson’s disease collaborations.
Publications: Her recent articles focus on glucose transporter dysfunction, adipocyte size alterations, hypothalamic-striatal neuropathology, inflammation biomarkers, and blood-brain barrier preservation in Alzheimer’s models. These studies highlight metabolic, neuroinflammatory, and gender-specific subfields.
Supervision & Grants: She served on the examining committee for PhD student Liana Fasching. She leads projects like Exploring the Role of Meningeal Immune Alteration in Huntington’s Disease (Ulm University Hospital, 2024–2025) and contributed to the long-term BAGADILICO initiative for basal ganglia disorders.
Labs & Collaborations: Maria collaborates within Lund University’s Faculty of Medicine and MultiPark, integrating multidisciplinary approaches to neurodegenerative disease research.
