Maria Bengtsson is a Professor at the Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE) within the Department of Business Administration and Entrepreneurship at Umeå University. Her research focuses on strategic management, particularly in areas of coopetition (cooperation-competition dynamics), paradox management in organizations, sustainability-driven business models, and trust/distrust dynamics in interorganizational relationships. She has published extensively in journals like Strategic Management Review, Industrial Marketing Management, and Long Range Planning.
Her work explores how firms navigate tensions between cooperation and competition, especially in cross-sectoral collaborations for sustainability. Key themes include top management team diversity's impact on coopetition capability, mechanisms for managing trust and distrust in project-based partnerships, and the role of emotions in paradoxical relationships. She has contributed to frameworks for understanding coopetition at multiple organizational levels and its implications for firm performance.
Recent research emphasizes systemic approaches to sustainability challenges, such as system dynamics modeling for eco-innovation and circular business models. Her studies often bridge theory and practice, offering insights for firms in creative industries, robotics automation ecosystems, and SMEs.
Bengtsson has been a keynote speaker and session chair at major conferences including EURAM and EGOS. Her work has been cited in interdisciplinary contexts, from organizational paradoxes to regional innovation systems. She collaborates internationally with scholars in Europe and North America on projects funded by Swedish and EU research councils.
