Maria Argos serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. Her research program focuses on environmental and molecular epidemiology of chronic diseases, with particular emphasis on the health effects of metal exposures. She leads the Bangladesh Environmental Research in Children's Health (BIRCH) cohort study investigating early life health effects of arsenic exposure and metal mixtures, and serves as co-investigator for multiple major research initiatives including the Health Effects of Arsenic Longitudinal Study (HEALS), the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, the All of Us Research Program, and the UIC Cohort of Patients, Family and Friends.
Dr. Argos's research interests center on environmental epidemiology, particularly the molecular pathways altered by environmental exposures that influence disease risk. She leverages high-dimensional molecular data and biomarker data obtained from biological specimens collected in epidemiological settings. Her work has significant emphasis on gene-environment interactions and the development of epidemiological methods for assessing these complex relationships. Her research spans multiple populations, with extensive experience implementing longitudinal epidemiologic studies among diverse participant populations in the US and internationally.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent output across environmental health, epidemiology, and molecular biology, with recent work focusing on metal exposures, epigenetic mechanisms, and health outcomes in diverse populations. Her research has particular strength in studies of arsenic exposure effects and metal mixtures in Bangladeshi and Hispanic/Latino populations.
- Principal Investigator, Bangladesh Environmental Research in Children's Health (BIRCH) cohort

Dr. Argos has established herself as a leading researcher in environmental epidemiology with particular expertise in metal exposures and their health effects. Her work bridges molecular biology, epidemiology, and public health to understand how environmental factors contribute to chronic disease development across diverse populations.
