Maria-Alzira Seixo is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Europe (elected 1990), affiliated with the University of Lisbon where she has worked as a Professor since 1979. Her primary focus is Modern Portuguese Literature.

She has received prestigious awards including the Pen Award (2001) and Jacinto do Prado Coelho Award (1999).
