Helena Carvalhão Buescu

Helena Carvalhão Buescu is a Full Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Lisbon's Faculty of Arts. She earned her PhD from the same institution in 1988 and has held visiting professorships at King’s College London (2008) and Indiana University Bloomington (1994). As founder and former director of the Centre for Comparative Studies, she has led major research initiatives for 15 years while serving on executive boards of international organizations including the International Comparative Literature Association and European Science Foundation.

Her research examines:

• Comparative Literature: Theoretical frameworks and methodological innovations
• World Literature: Global literary canons and transnational dynamics
• Portuguese Literature: 18th-20th century developments and cultural contexts
• Literary Theory: Concepts of modernity, cosmopolitanism, and cultural exchange

Her recent publications (2013-2018) demonstrate consistent focus on Portuguese literature in global contexts, world literature theory, and reinterpretations of literary history. Works frequently engage with themes of cultural identity, postcolonial perspectives, and cross-cultural dialogue.
