Maria Alvarez is Professor of Philosophy at King's College London's Department of Philosophy within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. Her research explores fundamental questions about human agency, including the metaphysics of action, normative reasons, moral responsibility, and free will.
Education:
- BA, MA, and PhD in Philosophy from Trinity College, Cambridge
Research focuses on the philosophy of action, investigating how actions are explained and justified, the nature of agency, and connections between freedom and moral responsibility. She examines historical perspectives from philosophers including Aristotle, Aquinas, Thomas Reid, and G.E.M. Anscombe while developing original theories of practical reason and normativity.
Her recent publications analyze action causation, two-way powers, moral blame, and practical reasoning. Scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with action theory foundations while addressing contemporary debates about responsibility, rationality, and agency.
Teaching includes Philosophy of Mind and Action, Moral Responsibility, Ethics, and Metaethics. As Co-Editor of Philosophy (journal of the Royal Institute of Philosophy), she contributes to scholarly discourse and public philosophy through media engagements including The Guardian, TLS, and BBC Radio 4 programs.
