Maria Adele Carrai is an Assistant Professor of Global China Studies at New York University Shanghai, focusing on the history of international law in East Asia and China's global power dynamics. She co-leads the Mapping Global China research initiative and authored Sovereignty in China: A Genealogy of a Concept since 1840 (2019) and co-edited The China Questions 2: Critical Insights into US-China Relations (2022).
- Education: Ph.D. in Law (University of Hong Kong, 2016), MA in Political Science (University of Bologna), MA in East Asian Studies (Ca' Foscari University of Venice), BA in Chinese Studies (Sapienza University of Rome)
Her research interests span International Law, Legal History, and Global Governance, with a focus on China’s evolving sovereignty concepts, the Belt and Road Initiative, and transnational infrastructure projects. Recent publications analyze China’s economic zones in Africa/Europe, BRI adaptation post-pandemic, and legal debates on sovereign debt. She has received prestigious fellowships, including Marie-Curie and Swire Scholarship.
